4/4 Presidents » William J. Clinton

During the administration of William Jefferson Clinton, the U.S. enjoyed more peace and economic well being than at any time in its history. He was the first Democratic president since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win a second term. He could point to the lowest unemployment rate in modern times, the lowest inflation in 30 years, the highest home ownership in the country's history, dropping crime rates in many places, and reduced welfare rolls. He proposed the first balanced budget in decades and achieved a budget surplus. As part of a plan to celebrate the millennium in 2000, Clinton called for a great national initiative to end racial discrimination. [X] [X]

fyeahwomenofcongress:

Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, both Democrats, are the first two female senators from California, as well as the only two female Jewish senators in history. First elected in 1992, a year which saw a record number of women elected (Senator Patty Murray of Washington, as well as former Senator Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois were also elected), they are now the second and third senior women in the Senate, respectively, after Maryland's Barbara Mikulski. Come the 114th Congress, they will be the third and fourth in line on the Democratic side, respectively, for the position of President Pro Tempore should Patrick Leahy vacate it, after Mikulski and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Feinstein is now the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. She served as the first female mayor of San Francisco after the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk, the nation's first openly gay elected official (it was Feinstein who first discovered their bodies). She served as mayor from 1978-1988, after previously having served eight years on the city Board of Supervisors, and made an unsuccessful bid for governor in 1990, before being elected in a special election to the Senate in 1992. Boxer is the chairwoman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, and previously served as a US Representative from California's sixth district from 1983-1993, and on the Marin County Board of Supervisors from 1977-1983. She has written two novels and is the mother of film producer Nicole Boxer, who produced the Oscar-nominated documentary The Invisible War about sexual assault in the military. Nichole Boxer was also once married to Tony Rodham, the brother of Hillary Clinton, and had a son from that marriage, who happens to have a United States Senator as a grandma and a former Secretary of State for an aunt.

Boxer recently said that, "When I started out [in politics] it was an absolute disadvantage to be a woman. You had to prove you understood numbers, that you understood history."
